Did You Know?
The City of Staples was incorporated in 1889 as the Village of Presto. When Andrew J. Clark founded the newspaper on March 1, 1890, he named it “The Presto Change.”
Although the town was named “Presto,” the railroad and the post office system referred to it as “Staples,” after King Staples, who established a lumber mill here. His wife was the first postmaster.
Under a new publisher the name of the newspaper was changed to “Staples World” in February, 1892.
The name of the village wasn’t officially changed to Staples until a vote on March 12, 1895.
