Community Connect offers free food, rides, information, coats

Dozens of resources that reach out and help people have been pulled together by Staples Motley Beyond Poverty for the second annual Community Connect, a resource fair for people who want to know more about local services that can help them. The event is Wednesday, Oct. 26, 3-6 p.m. at the Staples-Motley High School gym.

Agencies include; education, employment, housing, finances, mental health, chemical dependency, county services, community organizations, public and private providers will all be available in the high school gym.

At 3:30 p.m., Dr. Shawna Kovach of Lakewood Health System will talk on mental health in the high school cafeteria. At 3:45, Maggie Freiberg, LICSW, will talk on the suicide connection to mental health.

Personal needs

Friendly Rider busses will be offering free transportation on Oct. 26, in Staples from 2-6 p.m., not just to the Community Connect event, but anywhere in Staples. To schedule a ride call 218-631-5730.

Free child care, free hair cuts and a free meal will also be available.

The Great Coat Giveaway will also be held Oct. 26, from noon-6 p.m. at the Staples Community Center p.m., with new and gently used coats for children and adults.

Conversation cards

Before the Community Connect event starts, Staples-Motley, Connections and Freshwater High School seniors will have an opportunity to talk to the people from the different  agencies.

The Staples Citizens Against Drugs Coalition will sponsor a presentation for students on underage drinking, along with their new conversation cards that will be available at the event. The cards are designed to spur conversations among friends and neighbors with simple questions such as; “What’s your favorite movie?” Moving on to questions like “what makes you feel most content?” Some of the cards ask questions about chemical dependency, such as “Do you have a healthy way to deal with loneliness, stress and disappointment? What could you do to deal with those feelings?”
