Staples Motley FFA work and show at state fair

Four members of the Staples Motley FFA Chapter attended the Minnesota State Fair Sept. 2-5 for the FFA encampment weekend. Rachel Paskewitz, Mikayla Sauber and Hayley Carlson showed livestock, and Katie Benson served as an ambassador for the FFA Leadership House.

The FFA Chapter House and Leadership Center is attached to the CHS Miracle of Birth Center and encourages guests to consider agriculture as a career through hands-on activities, engaging students and adults in thousands of possible careers. Benson spent five days at the leadership house promoting and advocating for the agricultural industry to fairgoers.

“The state fair is a chance for millions of people to connect with agriculture in a way they normally don’t during the average day. Through interactive experiences and conversations with real farmers, people start to connect the food they are eating with the hands that produce it,” commented Rebekka Paskewitz, the 2016-17 Minnesota FFA Reporter, and member of the Staples- Motley FFA chapter.

Although she graduated from Staples-Motley High School in 2016, Rebekka Paskewitz attended the fair to fulfill her duties as a state officer, which included working at the leadership house, the CHS Miracle of Birth Center (MOBC) and doing numerous media appearances advocating for the agricultural industry and promoting the Miracle of Birth Center.

Carlson, Sauber and Paskewitz participated in one of the things FFA members do best - showing livestock. All three showed beef cattle and Carlson also brought sheep.

“This was my last youth sheep show, so being able to have the Minnesota State Fair FFA show be my last and doing well, was probably one of my favorite parts of the fair,” said Carlson. She showed five sheep and had three second place finishes, one third and one class winner.

“Although getting to show my cows was fun, one of the highlights of the fair was getting to see and hang out with all the other FFA members that you only get to see a few times a year,” said Paskewitz.

All three did well with their cattle as well, Paskewitz placed first in her class and third overall, Sauber placed third in her class and Carlson won her class, but didn’t place in the overall show.

Advocating for the agricultural industry is always one of the highlights for those who attend the state fair. They also said that they had a great time and can’t wait for next year.
