Staples sales tax to start in April

The Staples City Council approved the first step in implementing the sales tax that was approved by voters  in the November election.

At their Nov. 22 meeting, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance enacting the .5 percent sales tax in the city, which will be applied to all taxable items sold in the city.

The second reading will be at their Dec. 13 meeting, but the tax still has to go through more confirmation by the state, so City Administrator Jerel Nelsen said it will likely start on April 1.

The tax will apply to all items that already have a sales tax according to Minnesota law.

All proceeds from the tax will go to fixing Staples Community Center, which is in need of heating and ventilation systems and other major repairs. The sales tax will end after 25 years, or when $1,600,000 is collected.

In other news, the council

o Set public hearing on assessments for non-payment of nuisance violations for the Dec. 13 meeeting.

o Accepted donation from Fire Relief Association of $26,289 to purchase firefighting equipment.
