Tax increment finance district for hotel approved
The Staples City Council approved a business subsidy agreement for a tax increment finance (TIF) district for a hotel to be built in Staples.
At the July 26 council meeting, the Ives family requested the TIF district to build the Timberlake Hotel between Highway 10 and 2nd Ave. NE.
The family will host a groundbreaking for the hotel on Monday, August 8, at noon.
Kruzin 4 Kidz
The council approved the closing of a portion of 2nd Ave. NE on Aug. 20 in front of Lefty’s Bar from 2-4 p.m. to accommodate motorcycles from Wadena that are a part of the Kruzin 4 Kidz rally which will be coming into Staples that day.
Randy Atchley of Wadena told the council that Kruzin 4 Kidz has raised more than $250,000 for area children to participate in Adopt-A-Wish program. He said this year they are donating to one child in the Staples area, among their recipients. He said for more information to stop at the Wadena Elks Lodge, where all the kids wishes are on the wall.
In other news, the council
o Approved Seth Dokken and Rachel Johnson to the planning and zoning commission.
o Approved resolution expressing support for the Stern Rubber expansion, to be used for their application to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) job creation program.
o Heard park board report suggesting fee increase of five percent for the fitness center fees at the community center.
o Heard from City Administrator Jerel Nelsen about Central Lakes College plans to put CLC banners on some light posts on Highway 10.
o Approved road closures for Railroad Days Aug. 25-27.
o Approved request from B&B’s Sports Bar to allow alcohol and music in an outdoor fenced in area during Railroad Days.
