Women of Today seeking members

Social event planned for Aug. 30 in Staples, all welcome

Would you like to: meet new people, have a night out for yourself, give back to your community, try new things or enrich your leadership skills?

If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these, the Staples Motley Area Women of Today extend to you an invitation to join. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., at the Landmark Inn, 631 3rd Ave. NE in Staples.

Prior to September’s meeting, the Staples Motley Area Women of Today chapter will host an “Amazing Race.” It will be held Tuesday, Aug. 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Landmark Inn. All are welcome to join in the fun which will include racing around Staples and participating in a variety of challenges.

This local chapter has a diverse membership including many area women business owners, young stay-at-home moms, to professionals who are grandmothers. With Women of Today, there is no age limit, unlike their predecessors, the Jaycees.

The Minnesota Women of Today is celebrating its 67th year as a volunteer organization dedicated to community service, personal growth, leadership training and forming long-lasting friendships. Upon reorganization of the Jaycee Women in 1985, the women created a new organization that same year which became known as the Women of Today. The Minnesota Women of Today has its roots in Minnesota Mrs. Jaycees, formed in the 1950s.

Members of Women of Today choose their level of involvement; from just attending social events to participating at the national level. Staples Motley Area Women of Today’s own Nicky Anderson is currently the United States Women of Today Membership President and on the state staff.

“There is something for everyone,” says Janet Kiley, President of the Staples Women of Today chapter. She went on to note that women join for a variety of reasons, including meeting new people, learning leadership skills, becoming involved in their community; and personal growth.

The Staples Motley Area Women of Today have been involved in a number of projects, including bringing the car show back to Railroad Days and partnering with Relay for Life. They have also been involved with golf tournaments, Music in the Park, Traveling Art Pub, wine tasting events and helping with a school playground equipment project. The local chapter also enjoys social events together, including kayak trips on the Crow Wing River.

The Minnesota Women of Today always strive to uphold their creed which states, “May we leave the world a better place because we lived and served within it.”
