The Heartland Symphony Orchestra (HSO) invites students or any other young musicians to audition for the 2017 Youth Concerto Competition.

Auditions will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, from 9 a.m.-noon  at the St. Francis Music Center in Little Falls. Up to two winners will perform with the HSO at its spring concerts:

o Friday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. Pequot Lakes High School Auditorium, Pequot Lakes.

o Saturday, April 1, 7:30 p.m. Charles D. Martin Auditorium, Little Falls.

o Sunday, April 2, 2:30 p.m. Tornstrom Auditorium, Brainerd.

This season marks the 40th anniversary of Heartland Symphony Orchestra. The 2017 Spring Concert Series is “Destinations.”

Students residing in the HSO’s Central Minnesota service area may audition on piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and voice, and must prepare a work from the standard concerto literature with orchestral accompaniment. Instrumentalists are asked to prepare one movement of a concerto or the equivalent. Vocalists should prepare two contrasting songs or arias.

A winner will be selected from each of two age categories: grades 10-12 and grades 9 and under.

In addition to performing in concert with the Heartland Symphony Orchestra, winners will receive a recording of their performance and a $500 award, thanks to a grant from Crow Wing Community Trust.

The application deadline is Friday, Jan. 13. The application form and rules  may be found and submitted on www.heartlandsymphony.com. For questions contact the Heartland Symphony Orchestra office at 1-800-826-1997 or by email at HeartlandSymphony@gmail.com.
