Child and Teen Checkups available in Cass County

To help children and teens grow into healthy adults, Cass County Public Health recommends regular well-child exams. These checkups are an important tool that health care providers use to screen for medical and developmental issues.

Regular medical, dental and vision checkups are necessary to assure any potential health problems are treated early, before they become more complex. The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to make sure your child is current on their checkups.

In Minnesota, ‘Child and Teen Checkups’ (C&TC) is the official name for the well-child exam. These specialized health checkups are available at no cost to children, teens and young adults, including young parents up to the age of 21 who are enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA). Parents can also use this health checkup to meet requirements for daycare, Head Start, camp or sports. At these specialized checkups, teens and young adults can also get guidance and services for holistic physical and mental health.

During a comprehensive C&TC, the health care provider will:  Complete a head to toe physical exam including height, weight, hearing and vision testing; assess development and social emotional health; provide immunizations and lab tests; conduct a blood lead test at 12 and 24 months; and provide health and nutrition education related to the child or teens age. Many providers will offer dental varnishing. Referrals can be made, if needed, to area dentists, specialists and/or service providers. A C&TC visit also offers a great opportunity for parents and children to build an ongoing relationship with their health care provider.

Cass County Public Health provides C&TC outreach services for well child checkups to children and teens ages birth up to age 21 who reside in Cass County. Child and Teen Checkup clinics are provided by a public health nurse for children birth through age 12 at locations throughout the county including the communities of Pillager, Longville, Remer, Pine River and Walker. Clinic dates and locations are published monthly in area newspapers. The complete C&TC exam is covered by MA; however, if the child is uninsured, there is an affordable sliding fee. For example, a family of five with annual income of $40,500 would pay only $5 per child for the complete exam including immunizations.
