Motley June Fest to offer variety of events

Music, fireworks and more

Pig races, a parade, fireworks and music are just a few of the activities taking place during the first ever ‘Motley June Fest.’

The event is sponsored by the Staples Motley Area Chamber of Commerce (SMACC), which has been working alongside a committee of people representing Motley’s businesses, organizations and service groups.

The majority of the festival will take place Saturday, June 18, although there are city wide garage sales all day on Friday, June 17; and a gospel concert and ice cream social is planned on Sunday, June 19, from 1 - 3 p.m. Although they are two separate events, the Motley June Fest is being held in conjunction with the Motley Fair, which runs June 16 - 19. “The committee is looking forward to a grand celebration of small town values with many fun-filled events being planned for the weekend,” said Barb Cline, SMACC Executive Director.

Motley June Fest kicks off on Saturday with a classic car and tractor show from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Motley School.  The City Parade follows at 10 a.m., with a variety of floats scheduled in the line-up.

The Leader Area Pig Races is the featured event of the festival and will be held at the grandstand at the fairgrounds. The two shows begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. This event is sponsored by Motley School alumni and Motley businesses.

From 11:30 - 1 p.m., be sure to check out the Wings Competition downtown and listen to music by Rampage, a U.S. Army band which plays New Orleans style brass.

Music continues from 1 - 3:30 p.m., with husband and wife duo Tami & The Bachelor.

Up and coming singers ages 15 - 25 will have the opportunity to compete in the ‘Motley Sings’ contest at 4 p.m. “We are looking for the best two voices to send to the ‘Minnesota Sings’ event in September to represent our area,” said Cline.

A street dance, featuring the band October Son, will take place from 8 p.m. - midnight; and fireworks are scheduled at 10 p.m.

The festivities wrap up on Sunday with a gospel concert (The Schimpps and The Timbs) and ice cream social at Veterans Park from 1 - 3 p.m.

“Events like this could not happen without sponsors,” Cline said of the Motley June Fest. For more information on Motley June Fest, call the chamber office at 218-894-3974 or check out their Facebook page.
