Wadena’s Highway 10 project is postponed

A project to reconstruct Highway 10 through Wadena, originally scheduled to begin in 2018, has been postponed until 2019, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The project, which will redesign the road and make improvements to other infrastructure in Wadena, was delayed to allow time to complete the required pre-construction environmental testing, reporting and permitting work.

Highway 10 through Wadena was originally constructed in 1948 and has been resurfaced four times. The road was last resurfaced in summer 2011. MnDOT plans to resurface Highway 10 in summer 2017 to preserve the roadway until the reconstruction project can begin in 2019.

“Our maintenance crews will be out on Highway 10 patching every chance we get, as weather allows, until the larger projects begin” said Todd Sangren, MnDOT District 3 Maintenance Superintendent. “We’re asking local motorists to help us out by watching for those repair crews, slowing down at the work zone, and moving over to give workers plenty of room to work safely.”

The 2019 project will reconstruct Highway 10 between Birch Avenue and Wadena County Road 4 in Wadena. Improvements along the redesigned segment in Wadena include:

o Raised concrete median to separate eastbound and westbound Highway 10 traffic

o Dedicated turn lanes for safe access to local roads

o Improved intersections and sidewalks

o Upgraded signal systems

o Improved storm sewer, city utilities, lighting and signing.

The two-lane rural sections of Highway 10 between Bluffton and Birch Avenue, and from County Road 4 to Oink Joint Road, will be resurfaced. Also, new left-turn lanes will be installed at the Highway 10/County Road 75 intersection, west of Wadena.

When complete, the work will improve safety, accessibility and drainage in the area, and provide a smoother ride along 5.7 miles of Highway 10.
