A pair of swans with three young swans (babies are called cynets) paddle peacefully away from human observation on a blustery, cloudy Sunday, Sept. 25. The five were spotted southeast of Staples in a small cattail lined creek. The swans typically remain hidden during the day, foraging for water insects, small fish, fish eggs and small aquatic plants and roots. (Staples World photo by Janice Winter)
