Care center residents receive special gift

Each of the 100 residents at Lakewood Health System Care Center in Staples received a special gift from the Piecemakers Quilt Club during the holiday season - handmade pillowcases.

“My parents received pillowcases on the Fourth of July and Christmas while they lived in a nursing home in Tracy,” said Annette Good, a member of the Piecemakers Quilt Club. “I liked the idea so much, I mentioned it to the rest of the group and we decided to do something similar in Staples. We went through our ‘resources center,’ which is all the extra Christmas fabric we have from previous projects; and made 115 pillowcases.”

The Piecemakers club also donates to several other causes in the community, including Habitat for Humanity and various fundraising events. Over the years, they’ve made and donated burp clothes to babies born at Lakewood, as well as a special quilt for the New Year’s baby.
