Construction underway for area hog feedlot

Construction is underway for a new hog farrowing feedlot in Byron Township, located on 80th St. SW, just west of Hwy 64 in Cass County.

The name of the feedlot is Cass Crest, LLC; and will be home to two barns, a workshop; and below barn engineered concrete manure storage pits. It is owned by multiple individuals.

According to their permit application, the new farrowing barn will be 181’ by 252’ x 2’ and will hold 416 farrowing sows for a total of 166.4 animal units; and the new gestation barn will be 123’ x 574’ x 8 ‘ for 2,080 sows or 832 animal units.  Both barns will be total confinement.

Dave Labenz serves as  farm manager of the project, with management services provided by Preferred Capital Management.

Construction is behind schedule, Labenz said, noting that the weather has contributed to this. “We’ve had a lot of set-backs due to rain; but we’re hoping to be getting pigs in there by the end of the year.”

The general contractor for the project is Environment Control Systems out of Morris. Several subcontractors have been working at the site recently as well, including Riverview LLP, Morris; and Giza Plumbing and Heating in Staples.
