DAC to rent downtown Staples retail building

The Staples Economic Authority agreed to go ahead with a proposed rental agreement from the Todd County Developmental Achievement Center (DAC) for use of the SEDA retail annex building, the former Staples Dollar Store, at 125 4th St. NE.

At the Oct. 27 SEDA meeting, Staples City Administrator Jerel Nelsen said the DAC proposed a low cost rent of $500 per month for the first year, then once the business is grown, they plan to discuss purchasing the building or increasing the rent.

The DAC currently operates the Thread Shed II in Staples and Nelsen said this new enterprise will be in addition to that store and will not replace it. The current plan is for the new store to specialize in children’s clothing and then add products from truckoad sales, following a business plan similar to stores in Little Falls and Sauk Centre. Like the Thread Shed, the new store will be staffed by DAC clients.

The board approved going forward with the proposal and told Nelsen to write up an agreement to be approved by the SEDA.

Newly hired Economic Development Director Melissa Radermacher was at the meeting but does not start in the position until Nov. 9, so she will be the one to bring the agreement to the board at their next meeting on Nov. 24.

In other news, the SEDA approved sending out surveys to businesses in the City of Staples.
