Police arrest one in knife incident

On Sept. 13, at 12:20 a.m., Staples Police responded to Hwy 10 and 6th St NE for a report of a male yelling and bleeding from his arm. 

Police located the subject at the ER at LHS Hospital after he had been given a ride by the reporting party. After speaking with the subject it was learned he had been assaulted with a knife and received a cut on his arm. 

After investigation, police arrested Thomas Anderson, 29, of Staples for his role in the incident. According to the police report, Anderson said he had gotten into an argument with the victim and the victim had previously assaulted him. He also relayed a history of fights with the victim and stated he was afraid of him. 

Later that evening, the victim made threats in front of Anderson’s home but was not charged in the incident.

Other reports into the police department included;

Sept. 14; Staples Police responded to a property damage accident on 4th St NE in front of Trinity Lutheran Church. A car pulling a trailer that came  loose from the hitch,and hit a parked hearse owned by Brenny Funeral  Home that was parked on 4th St NE. The crash caused the hearse to move forward, striking another Brenny Funeral Home  vehicle.  There was moderate damage to the hearse. 

Sept. 14; Staples Police assisted the Todd County Sheriff’s Dept. with a report of gunshots and suspicious activity on Timberlane Rd.  Police checked the area, along with the Todd County Sheriff’s Dept, but no one was located.

Sept. 18; Staples Police received a complaint of two vehicles racing in the 300 block of 8th St. SE. Police identified both drivers after speaking to witnesses. Police contacted one of the drivers and advised him on the complaint.

Sept. 18; Staples Police responded to the 300 block of Nebraska SW for a report of a domestic. Both individuals involved were separated and one agreed to leave the residence. Police will be forwarding reports to the city attorney to review for possible charges.

Sept. 21;  at approximately 1 a.m., Staples Police responded to the Staples Depot, to assist with a subject who was on Amtrak, and was reported to be having mental health issues. The subject was  advised by Amtrak staff that they could no longer ride the train, due to their behavior. The subject  was assisted and advised by the police. Also responding was the Staples Ambulance. 

Sept. 21; Staples Police conducted a follow up on an individual waiting to board the Amtrak after being removed from the train the night before.

Sept. 24; Staples Police received a report a day after an incident took place at Dower Lake Campground, where someone was shooting a small caliber rifle out a window of a black truck. They were shooting toward the woods on the east side of the park.
