Summer school activities

(#23 Things to Do in Staples, “Take a Community Ed/summer school class.”)

Staples Motley Schools offered a mix of speakers, classes, field trips and other activities to students attending the first summer school session June 13-23. The focus was on reading, writing and math as well as social skills. Above, Carmen Genske, U of M Extension shared gardening tips for Staples Elementary School’s garden. She also showed them how to harvest and wash their lettuce so they could have it for lunch during the week. Below, Shelly Miller, school food service director, served lunch. Other speakers included Jeff Halverson, conservation officer; Staples Police Chief Missi Birkholtz and Sergeant Ron Case; and professionals from Lakewood Health System. Jody Johnson and Pat DiGiovanni taught grades K-2 at Staples Elementary. Tammi Brisson and Lisa Przybilla taught grades 3-5 at Motley Elementary. Val Turner and Kermit Klefsaas taught grades 6-8 at the middle school.
