Alice Granby

Alice Rose Emma (Knapper) Granby, 88, of Staples  passed away July 28, 2021, at Lakewood Care Center, Staples.

Funeral services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Staples, Thursday, August 5, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Carl Larson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Interment will be at the Poplar Cemetery, Leader. 

Alice was born May 20, 1933 at home near Leader to Daniel Frank and Alice Ruth (Erickson) Knapper. She married Carl Wesley Granby on June 26, 1952 at Swan Valley Lutheran Church in Byron Township.

Besides raising a large family, helping care for Carl’s parents and helping with some of the farming, Alice raised a large garden to help feed the growing family.  She enjoyed sewing, teaching her daughters and  granddaughters the art. Alice and Carl were past members of Swan Valley Lutheran Church and more recently, Faith Lutheran Church in Staples. She was an active member of the Poplar Ladies Birthday Club and Ladies Aide where she became involved with the Mission Quilter group, making hundreds of quilts with them. She made numerous “Lady Quilts”, at least one for each of her children; one for each of her grandchildren “for their wedding present” and one for each great-granddaughters as first birthday gifts, several for raffle prizes for church and even sold a few.  She also loved to hand embroidery dish towels, pillow cases and read books.

Alice is survived by six children: Keith (Vicki) Granby of Staples, Charlene (Duane) Breid of Lakeville, Beverly (Dave) Grose of Sauk Rapids, Carl (Lila) Granby, Orel (Alice) Granby and Bruce (Julie) Granby, all of Staples; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother and sister-in-law, Albert and JoAnne Knapper; four sisters-in-law, Margaret (Charles) Knapper, Shirley (Irvin) Knapper,  Pat (Marvin) Knapper and Alvina (Harold) Knapper.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; parents; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Martin and Edna Knapper, George and Robin Knapper, Ernest and Ladona Knapper, Charles Knapper, Irvin Knapper, Harold Knapper, Marvin Knapper, Marie and  Earl Elestad; one granddaughter, Amy Granby and one great-grandson, Tristen Granby.

Arrangements are by the Brenny Family Funeral Chapel, Staples.
