Gerald Sanger

Gerald (Jerry) Thomas Sanger, 83, Wabasha, died December 2, 2016, at a nursing facility in Wabasa.

Jerry willed his remains to the Mayo Clinic for research, so he will be laid to rest at a later date at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

Jerry was born May 20, 1933, in Staples to John and Elma Sanger. He attended Staples schools, graduating from Staples High School in 1950. He became a Trappist monk and priest at Trappist Monastery at New Melleray Abbey in Peosta, Iowa. He was ordained in Rome in the 1950s. He left the monastery in the 1970s and became a nurse. He lived and worked in Rochester for the Mayo Organization until he retired in 1995. He went on to serve as a personal care attendant and retired in 2009. He was interested in peace causes, was a member of Pax Christi, a Catholic peace movement, volunteered in the Partners to Adults with mental health illness program and provided a friendly ear to those feeling isolated by  their mental health illness. He lived at a nursing facilty in Wabasha for the past two years.

Jerry is survived by one brother; Lawrence of Canton, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Jack.
