Jean Chaffin

The memorial service celebrating the life of Jean Chaffin of Eagle Bend and formerly of Hewitt, was held August 9, 2019, at the New Life Church of God in Bertha.

 Jean, age 77, passed away surrounded by her family on August 5, 2019, at her home in rural Eagle Bend under the gentle care of her family and Lakewood Home Care and Hospice.

Burial was in Moran Methodist Cemetery, Germania Township.

Jean Elizabeth Sowles was born to Merrell Warren and Elizabeth Evaline (Mowat) Sowles on March 20, 1942, in Evart, MI. She attended grade school in Evart, high school in Edmore, MI and continued her education at Marion Wesleyan College in IN, then Central College in Mt. Pleasant to attain a teaching degree in Home Economics.

Jean was united in marriage with Charles Lee Chaffin on April 2, 1966, in Fairfield, CA. As a pastor’s wife, she moved around, living in Colorado, North and South Dakota, then finally settled in Minnesota.

She loved teaching. She taught in a multitude of places including on the Red Lake Reservation, Sunshine Bible Academy in SD, Pillager, Staples and Bertha, long with subbing in multiple places. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and playing games. 

Locally, Jean had been a member of the Hewitt Church of the Nazarene and later the New Life Church of God in Bertha. Jean’s spiritual life was strongly impacted by her Grandma and Grandpa Mowat of rural Evart. She came to faith in Christ while kneeling at her mother’s bedside when she was nine-years-old. 

Left with loving memories are her husband, Charles, of Eagle Bend; three sons, Kenneth (Lela) Chaffin of Winona, David (Carolyn) Chaffin of Bertha and Jeffery (Kelly) Chaffin of Spearfish, SD;  six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; along with her brother, Dale Sowles.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Merrell Sowles and Elizabeth Sowles Ralph; and siblings Ruth Gray and Glen Sowles.

Honorary urn bearers were grandchildren, Rachel Chaffin, Haley Klopp, Aaron Chaffin, Callan Vaneps, Michael Chaffin, and Nathaniel Chaffin.
