Larry Pilgrim

Larry W. Pilgrim, 80,  of Verndale, passed away September 3, 2016 at Douglas County Hospital, Alexandria.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Frederick’s Catholic Church in Verndale with Father Lauren Germann officiating. Per Larry’s wishes colorful clothing may be worn.Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. 

Interment will be at Green Lawn Cemetery in Verndale.

Arrangements are with Taylor Funeral Care, Staples.

Larry was born at home, August 21, 1936 to William and Agnes (Wait) Pilgrim in Ottertail County south of Wadena. Larry married Patricia Horn in November of 1953. The marriage was dissolved in 1979. 

Following college he served in the U.S. Army in Korea from April 1955 to February 1957 as a radio teletype operator. He was honorably discharged as a CPL. After the service he went to work for Monarch Ice Cream Co. in Wadena and in August 1963 he went to work as a rural mail carrier with the U. S. Postal Service in Verndale. Larry retired from the postal service in 1998. On October 24, 1998, Larry married Monica (Kinney) Adamietz at St. Frederick’s Catholic Church in Verndale. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks Club, Bison Baseball team and St. Frederick’s Catholic Church, where he taught religious education classes for ten years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, especially going to New Mexico every year with his sons, elk hunting. He enjoyed going to all his son’s, step-son’s and grandchildren’s athletic events.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003 and dementia in 2016.

Larry is survived by his wife; four sons, Tony (Marsha) of Altoona WI, Ted (Kathy) of Park Rapids, Joe (Kim) of Staples and Todd (Mari) of Albuquerque, NM; three step-sons, Anthony of TX, Tom and Dan both of Somerville, MA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five sisters; Phyllis of Hibbing, Gayle (Dan) Sams of Rosemount, Carol Thurston of Perham, Jean Pilgrim of AZ and Vicki of Apple Valley; one brother, Terry (Celeste) of OR and many other family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
