LaVern "Fred" Wohlert

LaVern (Fred) Wohlert, 88, of Lake Shamineau, passed away April 7, 2018, at Lakewood Health System Hospital in Staples. 

Services will be held Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m. at the Motley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday, April 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples and one hour prior to services at the church. 

Military Honors provided by the Motley American Legion Post #124.

LaVern was born October 21, 1929 in Wadena, to Arthur and Elizabeth (Kresien) Wohlert. He graduated from Wadena High School. After graduation, he worked for Armour Meat Packing in Fargo. In 1950 he joined the U.S. Army, assigned to the 114th Transportation Company at Camp McCoy, WI. He was Honorably discharged in 1952 and began working for National Foods. LaVern was the market manager for many years, later working at Ernie’s Food Market in Staples. On April 20, 1954 he married Delores Johnson. They lived in Wadena, Morris, Staples and Lake Shamineau. LaVern enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and, in 2000, he experienced riding a mule to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back. He enjoyed spending time with family and being at the lake.

LaVern is survived by his wife; one daughter, Roberta; one son, Jeff (Dawn); seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Bev; sister-in-law, Jeanne (Gene); brothers-in-law, Elmer (Andrea), Maurice and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.
