Peter Card, Jr.

Peter Card Jr., 91, of Staples, passed away October 18, 2024.

A private burial will be held at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Staples.

Peter was born August 26, 1933 to Peter Card Sr., Staples and Lucille Marion (Dickinson) Card of Verndale. He was the grandson of James H. Card, the first boy born in Staples Mills, now Staples.

Peter attended and graduated from Staples High School. He enlisted in the U.S.A.F. in 1952, during the Korean Conflict. He attended jet engine and aicraft schools and became a crew chief on the F94 and F89 air-to-air interceptors. He was honorably discharged in 1956. In September of that same year he was employed by the Northern Pacific Railroad, serving in the capacity of locomotive fireman. In 1964 he was transfered into train service where he served as a frieght train conductor for the last 20 years of his career retiring in 1995 after 39 years of service.

Peter was cofounder of the Staples and Verndale Historical Societies and was a charter member of the Verndale Chapter. He served as the Staples Township clerk for a number of years and six years as supervisor of Becker Township, Cass County. “Card’s Landing” on the Crow Wing River in Becker Township was named after the family.

He was an avid wildlife photographer, geneologist and a collector of Staples’ history. He and his wife, Lila, traveled the U.S. and Europe extensively.

Peter is survived by two step-children, Rita (Cleveland) Folsom and Jerome Cleveland; four sons, Keith (Eva) Card, Peter Card III, Mark (Cindi) Card and Michael Card; four siblings, Roseann Bonin, Maxine Card, Alan (Linda) Card and Marlene (Bob) Card-Reeck; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Peter is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lila (Jacobson) Card; mother, Lucille; father, Peter Sr.; stepmother, Ruby (McKnight) Card; one brother, Theodore and one granddaughter, Vanessa.
