Better attendance leads to a better student

As we enter into the winter months of the 2016-17 school year, attendance concerns seem to follow right along with weather.

At ISD 2170, we expect our students to be here. Research shows, time and again, that attendance is the largest factor in a student’s success in school. There’s a phrase that reads: “The world is run by those who show up.” We couldn’t agree more. Their grades, activities and athletics all stay the course when attendance isn’t a concern.

We owe it to our students and families to maintain our attendance expectations. They’re real and very relevant to the workforce awaiting them after they graduate. Here at the high school, “habits” mean as much to us as academics. As a staff, we feel assisting our students in strong habits, both school and life related, is part of our obligation to their education. With all of us working to keep their expectations in good standing, success isn’t far behind.

As an effort to better serve our families, we’ll be activating our “Attendance Calls” via Skyward Family Access. If your student is marked absent in any of their classes, you’ll be getting an email, voicemail and/or text message based on the information we have in Skyward Family Access. We feel it’s important we’re all in the loop with your student’s attendance.

We have adopted the same attendance policies and expectations at all three building sites. This was developed by our administration and social workers to consistently have the same message and accountabilities for our students and families. Throughout our process in developing our policies, research and input was utilized from many resources to ensure the best practices.

From kindergarten to graduation, we feel consistent attendance matters. As a parent, you can excuse up to five days per semester. After that, professional services documentation is required for any other absences. You can reference our handbooks for more detailed information.

As always, we’re here to work with you. By keeping us informed as to situations you’ve encountered, we can better serve you and your student(s).

Simply put, our classrooms and buildings are better when we’re all here. The consistencies lend themselves to reaching higher and digging deeper with our teaching and learning.
