Volunteers needed for student ‘Activity Days’

In an effort to work toward our 2020-21 vision of becoming the region’s school district of choice, our school board granted our teaching staff an additional five days of professional development for the 2016-17 school year.

This extra time will give us an opportunity to work together to make sure our teachers are up-to-date on the newest research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom and new curriculum resources.

As we were planning for additional days for professional development, we realized those extra days may be a burden for families who need to find childcare. It would also mean lost wages for staff who don’t normally work on professional development days, including cooks, bus drivers and para-professionals. So we took back three of those days and began planning “Activity Days.”

On Activity Days, teachers will have professional development off-site, and we have planned activities for the students that are engaging, fun and educational. Students will still ride the bus to and from school, breakfast and lunch will be served, and paras and building principals will be there to keep watch over them. In addition, we will be asking for volunteers to either assist with activities or chaperone scheduled field trips.

The Activity Days will take place on Jan. 3, Feb. 3 and April 3. They are required attendance days for our students. In other words, a child will need a note from their parent/guardian in order not to attend school on any of the three days, otherwise the day will be counted as an unexcused absence.

We will need many volunteers and the sign-up time for Jan. 3 is right now. Because each volunteer needs to complete a background check, we must have all our volunteers in place by Dec. 1.

If you are interested in helping out on Jan. 3, call Bonnie at the District Office and let her know which building you would like to sign-up to volunteer. Choices include Elementary (Grades K-3), Middle School (Grades 4-7) or High School (Grades 8-12). You can either call Bonnie at 218-894-5400, Ext. 0 or email her at bmadson@isd2170.k12.mn.us.

Thank you for helping make this opportunity possible for our staff and students.
