Cardinals get 36-6 win for Homecoming
The Staples-Motley football team started slow but ended up rolling to a 36-6 Homecoming game win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Oct. 7.
The game started with both defenses gaining the upper hand. The first two Cardinal drives ended with a punt and lost a fumble on fourth and seven.
Hunter Berggren broke the game open with a 37 yard run late in the first quarter and Eric Lisson followed that up with a five yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
LPGE also had a breakthrough with a long run and a nice touchdown pass to tie the score at six, but it was the last time they threatened in the game.
Staples-Motley got their passing game involved as Trey Skeesick had a first down catch from quarterback Mason Rychner, and the two connected again for the extra point after Lisson scored on the drive.
Lisson scored his third touchdown of the game and added the two point conversion to make it 22-6 at halftime.
The Cardinals had two more scores in the second half, by Berggren and Lisson, as the defense stayed strong. Rychner capped the night off with an interception in the fourth quarter. Josh Lombard finished the second score by running in the extra point.
Staples-Motley plays Wadena-Deer Creek at home on Friday, Oct. 14, then travels to Crookston on Wednesday, Oct. 19 for the regular season finale.
