Edin places fourth at state tennis meet

Izabella Edin earned a fourth place medal at the Class A State Tennis Meet on Oct. 28, winning her first two matches and dropping her final two.

“It was good, it was a lot of fun,” she said. “I love the competition atmosphere at state, and there were a lot of fans that came out to watch.” Those fans included quite a few teammates, four of whom stayed overnight with Edin and coaches Kayla Janson and Katie Edin.

On the first day, Edin breezed through the competition, winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0.

On the second day, her diabetes started acting up. “It happens occasionally and it’s something out of my control,” she said. “My blood sugar was high and I was disoriented, in the first match I wasn’t sure where I was or even who I was.”

Edin ended up losing 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.

In the second match the diabetes led to dehydration, which led to arm and leg cramps, limiting her serve and forehand. “When my blood sugar is so high, I can’t physically drink enough water to keep up,” she said. She lost the third place match 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 2-6.

Despite the medical setback, Edin said the state tournament was a good way to end her senior year. The previous year she had played USDA club tournaments and was glad she went back to the high school league. “It was very good for me to play this year,” she said. “The girls were really great, I got to spend a lot of time with them, also the bonding with (coaches) Kayla and Katie is something I don’t get at USDA. It will be a highlight of my years playing tennis.”
