Football team falls short on final drive
The Staples-Motley football team tied the game three times, but came eight yards short of tying it a fourth time and they fell 28-20 to Wadena-Deer Creek on Oct. 14.
The WDC passing game had the Cardinals off-balance starting with their first drive when they scored a touchdown pass on a third and 25 play.
The Cardinal offense had a good rushing attack, but they only ground out six points in the first half on an Eric Lisson touchdown.
In the second half, Staples-Motley scored on a passing play from Josh Lombard to Derek Kennedy and Lisson ran in the conversion.
In the fourth quarter, Mason Rychner made a nice catch and run to get into scoring territory and Hunter Berggren carried it into the end zone.
WDC converted third and fourth down plays on their final touchdown drive.
The Cardinals responded with their own drive, which included a fourth down catch by Kennedy. But they got to the eight yard line and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down to end the game.
