Girls hoops team suffers three losses
The Staples Motley girls basketball team played three close games but ended up with three losses, falling to Pequot Lakes 62-49 on Jan. 5, to Fergus Falls 58-52 on Jan. 7, and an overtime loss to Park Rapids, 72-67, on Jan. 11.
“We have a very challenging schedule in January and February to get us ready for tournaments,” said Coach Craig Wolhowe. “We need to improve on our mental aspect of the game for us to be successful.”
Against Pequot Lakes, the Cardinals fell behind early. “Pequot is ranked in the top five in the state and you can not come out slow against a team like that,” said Coach Craig Wolhowe. “Once we started to play our style, we played even with them.”
“Our focus was to take away their fast break and we did not execute that,” said Wolhowe. He said the team also had trouble with the PL zone defense.
Against Fergus Falls, the Cardinals fell behnid 15-2 but came back to tie the game at halftime. In the second half, Staples Motley lost track of the opponent’s best shooter and she hit four threes.
Against Park Rapids, the Cardinals took a three point lead at halftime but found the score tied at 61 at the end of the game. The team was outscored 11-6 in the overtime.
