Tennis team brings trophy back

The Staples-Motley girls tennis team took back the traveling trophy for the Highway 10 tournament Aug. 24, where doubles matches were played in Staples and singles matches were played in Wadena. The team played three competitive matches on Aug. 27, losing to Brainerd, Princeton and Minnewaska.

At the Highway 10 meet, Izabella Edin, Kelsi Peterson and the doubles team of Lexi Johnson/Claire Wolhowe all placed first helping the Cards win the eight team tournament.

“Everyone was excited to win our home tournament, it’s been a while,” said Coach Kayla Janson.

Johnson and Wolhowe won all their matches in straight sets.

“They played very well, They move well on the court and set up the point to close in, then put it away at the net,” said Coack Kayla Janson.

Edin and Peterson also won their titles in straight sets for all three matches.

At number two doubles, Katie Benson and Kelsie Weite came just a few points short of first place, losing the first set of the championship match in a tiebreaker, 8-6, and dropping the second set 6-4.

“I am pleased with how our team is playing in the start of the season,” said Janson. “The girls are very close. Our team does a lot of team dinners and activities together outside of tennis. It’s really nice to see a team care as much as they do.”
