Trap team targets state competition

The 2016 Staples Motley High School Trap Team has completed its third week of competition and is currently in second place behind Zimmerman in Class 4A Conference 4 with 15,600 points.

With 40 shooters from 6th -12th grade competing in the league, the Cardinals are having a very good season with four individuals currently in the top 100 of the state:

o Katie Benson tied for 9th with an average of 24.17.

o Jace Hoemberg, Jr., Travis Maicej, Dominick Carlson all tied for 46th with an average of 23.5.

With over 10,000 participants in the league this year, it is quite an accomplishment to make the top one percent of the league.

The team has two more weeks of competition left until the state championships in Alexandria on June 17. This championship will determine the top teams to compete in the MSHSL Championships held at Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake June 26.

The top 100 individuals in the league will also compete at the MSHSL Championships the same day. If the Cardinals keep up the good shooting, we should have our first representative at the MSHSL Championships this season, said coach Steve Benson.

The team would like to recognize the following shooters for shooting 25 straight so far this spring: Katie Benson, Dominick Carlson, Jace Hoemberg, Ethan Lingenfelter, Travis Maciej and Brenden Thompson; and 50 straight: Katie Benson and Brenden Thompson. The team would also like to thank the Staples Sportsman’s Club and their other sponsors for providing range time and the clay targets for their events.
