Wrestlers tested in dual meets
The Staples-Motley wrestling team had a busy week, defeating Wadena-Deer Creek 54-16 on Jan. 17, then wrestling in a triangular meet at Pelican Rapids on Jan. 19, where they lost to Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie 35-36 and won against Pelican Rapids 48-9. The Cardinals hosted the Don Dravis Duals on Jan. 21, winning two matches before falling to the state’s top ranked team, Frazee.
Coach Dave Anglin said the team is wrestling well against tough competition. The Cardinals may have learned the most from the losses. “We had some guys who didn’t do well but we still only lost by one point,” Anglin said about the Bertha-Hewitt loss.
Frazee brought seven ranked wrestlers to the meet. The Cardinals wrestled well in some of the matches but only came out with four wins overall.
“Overall we’re happy where we’re at, we are coming together as a team,” said Anglin. “It is a tough time of the year, they are fighting through it and good things will happen as a result.”
Several wrestlers got their first varsity action during the week, including Conner Dobson, Charles Woodwick and Alex Ross-Bahn.
